The Northwest Bronx in the 1950s was an unlikely place to find beauty. Virtually nothing was built to be beautiful. But beneath the years of grime and neglect, if you paid attention, there was a lot to see and remember. I don’t think anyone else noticed that the warm afternoon light made the rusty iron gate on the corner glow like molten gold. Or that the elevated IRT, a noisy nuisance on a summer night, carved a dazzling pattern of light and shadow on the red brick pavement below. Through the years, these vivid swatches of cherished memory have grown even more luminous These boyhood memories, distilled into essential simplicity, formed the basis of the architectural oeuvre, both paintings and prints.
